0871 Premium Rate Numbers
Following recent changes within the telecoms industry regulations 0871 numbers are now classed as Premium Rate numbers, which means that all services operating on this range must meet the requirements of www.phonepayplus.org.uk previously named ICSTIS.
Phonepayplus is funded by a share of all premium rate calls and operates independently, appointed by Ofcom the UK government regulator to oversee services that are paid via the phone and mobile text messaging services.
The main change in policy is that any 0871 service must first register with Phonepayplus before starting to operate. It only takes a few minutes to register using this link.
Should You Use 0871 Numbers?
It all depends on your business, If you are looking to increase the number of telephone sales enquiries you receive from marketing then the simple answer is no. However, if your sales lines are tied up with customers wanting free technical support then yes. Operating a dedicated 0871 support line will free up your inbound sales team and provide you with a small revenue to offset your operational costs.
0871 Numbers generate revenue of 8 pence per minute, that works out at approximately £5 per hour.
