Connect Bria (CounterPath) softphone to a NumberGroup SIP trunk
Map your NumberGroup SIP trunk credentials onto Bria Solo, Teams or Enterprise on desktop and mobile — domain, username, password, set in the Bria Portal. Mapping table plus CounterPath's own guide.
Bria (CounterPath, now an Alianza company) is the most widely deployed commercial softphone in UK business. One thing to know before you start: on Bria Solo and Bria Teams the SIP account is read-only inside the app — you enter your details in the Bria Portal and they provision down to every device. (Bria Enterprise and the older standalone editions take the same details directly in the app's Account Settings.)
When you ask us to set the trunk up, request Send Numbers As set to "International (+xx)" — Bria handles E.164 caller ID cleanly and matches it to your contacts.
The credentials and settings your device needs to register against the NumberGroup SIP trunk are:
- Domain / registrar:
sip.numbergroup.com - Authorisation ID (also called SIP username): looks like
T-AAAAAA-NNNe.g.T-102377-001 - Password: a random string we generate per trunk
- User-Agent Type: we set this our side to match your device (e.g. 3CX Phonesystem, DDI in R-URI (Asterisk), RFC3261 Standard Trunk) so DDIs present in the format your equipment expects
- Send Numbers As: also set our side — pick the format that works best for your platform:
- International (+xx) — true E.164 (
+441214001262) for 3CX, Cisco, Yealink and most modern PBXs - International (xx) — bare digits (
441214001262) for Asterisk / FreeSWITCH dialplan regex - United Kingdom — UK format (
01214001262) for direct-register desk phones / softphones where humans read the Caller ID
- International (+xx) — true E.164 (
- Allowed IPs (optional): for an extra security layer we can lock the trunk to only register from your office IPs — tell us which when you ask
Once you have the credentials, the rest of this guide walks through the device-side config. If you'd rather skip the config altogether, ask us — we'll do it for you on most common PBXs and phones.
Field mapping
CounterPath owns the click-path and keeps it current — the table below maps your NumberGroup trunk to the fields Bria asks for when you set up a voice account in the Portal.
For Bria Solo, sign in to the Bria Solo Portal (solo.softphone.com) and follow the prompt to set up your Voice account; for Bria Teams an administrator does the same in the Bria Teams Portal. You enter the domain of your SIP server, your username and your password — then the account provisions to the app on every device. Bria Enterprise / standalone editions enter the same three values under Account Settings → SIP account in the app.
Full navigation is in the manufacturer's own guide: CounterPath — Getting started with Bria Solo (Portal). We keep the click-path with them so it stays current — the table below is the part that's specific to your NumberGroup trunk.
| NumberGroup value | Bria field |
|---|---|
| sip.numbergroup.com | Domain (your SIP server) |
| T-AAAAAA-NNN | Username |
| your trunk password | Password |
That's the whole registration. Transport stays on UDP, and you can leave STUN off — NumberGroup uses symmetric RTP. If your account shows Ready, you're registered; Failed means the credentials need re-checking.
Two settings that trip people up on Bria Enterprise and the older standalone editions (where the app exposes the full SIP fields): if you see a separate Authorization name field as well as User ID, put your trunk username in both — they take the same value. And on the Advanced tab, set Re-register every to 60 seconds, which keeps registration solid behind most routers. (Bria Solo and Teams handle both automatically in the Portal, so you won't see these fields there.)
Mobile (Bria iOS / Android)
So calls ring when the app is in the background, Bria Mobile uses the Bria Push Service — enable Use Push Notifications in the account settings. If calls don't ring on the lock screen, toggle push off and on and make sure the OS allows background activity for Bria.
Verify
- The account status shows Ready (registered)
- We can confirm the trunk has registered our side — ring us or check the trunk-live email
- Dial your mobile to confirm Caller ID; ring your DDI to confirm inbound
If it won't work
- Status shows Failed: Username or Password wrong — re-check against the trunk email
- Domain must be
sip.numbergroup.comexactly - On a locked-down corporate network, outbound UDP 5060 may be blocked — test on another network or ask us about TLS
- One-way audio: disable SIP ALG on the router; leave STUN off
- Doesn't ring on mobile when backgrounded: re-enable push and allow background activity in the OS
Set fraud caps before going live
Even a single softphone seat should be capped. Ask us to set Fraud Detection Simultaneous Calls and a Daily Spend ceiling. See our telecom fraud guide.
Softphones included with Membership
Members get mobile and desktop softphone apps included — billed per active install at around £0.75/month, no named-user seat licences. Take the app off a device and the charge stops.
